20,000 Leagues Under the Sea starts out simply. M. Arronax, a French Biology Professor goes on the Abraham Lincoln, in search of a narwhal supposedly responsible for shipwrecks.

What made me go on reading that book was the mysterious character of Captain Nemo and the fascinating idea that Jules Verne used an invention which did not appear until the 20th century as the dominating setting of his novel. It really was a most curious prophecy, or did the inventors of the submarine rely on Verne's imagination ? I really don't know. But what I'm certain of is that whereas Verne should have put more imphasis on these two interesting points, Captain Nemo and his setting, he...
