In the City of Shy Hunters

by Tom Spanbauer

Tom Spanbauer is one of the most enchanting writers in America today, and In the City of Shy Hunters, his first novel in ten years, is a "rich and colorful" portrait of New York in the 1980s, told with "raw power" (David Wiegand, San Francisco Chronicle). Shy, afflicted with a stutter, and struggling with his sexuality, Will Parker comes to New York to escape the provincial western towns... (read more)

The book is about Life in Manhattan in the 80's. Unfortunately, the 80's are no longer and neither is this book. Way boring. Could not finish it.

Another great book by Tom Spanbauer, that for some unknown reason seems to be forgotten about under the shadow of "The Man Who Fell In Love With The Moon". That book IS better, yes, and if you're gonna read only one then I'd say read that one, but if you like that one you will like this one too! He writes with a magical realism which is really powerful. Manhattan becomes "Wolf Swamp" and things become bigger than they first appear while in Tom's spell. This has great characters and a spirit which makes you smile and feel happy to know that it exists in this world.

This is a compelling, moving tale of life in the East Village at time that helped define that neighborhood. I loved this book.

This was the first novel by Tom Spanbauer I read and I found it to be incredibly compelling and moving. The characters are rich and full of life. It is vivid in its graphic language and is true to the experiences of those involved. I loved it from start to finish and found the author to be one of the kindest most sincere people I have ever met.
