by Amitav Ghosh

Reprint of a classic novel that makes the reader political boundaries and cultural assumptions. Excellent on history,Egyptian and Indian culture. by the author of Shadow lines and Glass Palace. (read review)

Excellent book! A mix of history, memoir, and fiction. A touching witness to the connections between Muslim, Jew, Christian, and Hindu.

I am sure a lot of history & experience has gone behind the narrative. But that does not light it up as a nice reading experience.
The plot it self does not fire up the imagination, but the contemporary experiences are engaging a bit. Not a very interesting read, IMHO.

Just finished reading this book. As always Amitav ghosh has written a really well researched book on the connections between India and Egypt through various trade routes during the medieval times and how it all got destroyed by the militaristic actions of the Portuguese as they established their rule over the sea routes in this region..How well he juxtaposes this with his stay in Egypt during the late eighties is quite amazing. This would be really valuable when we embark on a trip to Egypt soon.
