Excavation

by James Rollins

High in the Andes, Dr. Henry Conklin discovers a 500-year-old mummy that should not be there. While deep in the South American jungle, Conklin's nephew, Sam, stumbles upon a remarkable site nestled between two towering peaks, a place hidden from human eyes for thousands of years.

Ingenious traps have been laid to ensnare the careless and unsuspecting, and wealth beyond... (read more)

    Couldn’t Put it Down!

This was my first Rollins novel and I must say I will be looking for more! This book is similar in plot to a Matthew Riley book (of which I have read 3) but written in a much better style that made this book very hard to put down.

The book starts with a Dominican priest being chased by very intent Incan warriors. It is very important for the priest to get to sacred Incan location before they catch him so he can do something before he dies. We then flash forward over 400 years to the mummified remains of the priest being discovered with a mysterious substance inside that melts at body temperature and cannot be frozen solid. A group of modern day Dominican priests are after the substance that they call Sangre del Diablo (blood of the devil). There is a great deal of suspense surrounding what happens with these priests and the scientists that were studying the substance.

All the while in Peru a dig is going on in which a buried pyramid has a hidden burial chamber. The Americans at the dig get trapped in the chamber and try to find an alternate way out which leads to another "world" filled with all kinds of danger. I don't want to give anything away but at times, Rollins' descriptions of how the Americans deal with the dangers had my heart pumping fast and my skin crawling!

This is my 2nd JRollins book and I'm starting to notice a pattern of being so engrossed that I can't bear to put it down.

I remain slightly dubious about the quality of the plot lines and noticed some repetitive plot gimmicks but overall, the story he weaves is too much fun to really be critical of it. It's got a very Indiana Jones feel to it and again he blurs the line between staying within the realm of probability to add a little sci fi to it.

And the ending was set up for a sequel so I'm now interested to see what happens next!

James Rollins delves into South American history and adds a touch of conspiracy. Fans of the Dan Brown will enjoy Rollins' twist on history.

If you like high adventure and Indian Jones type novels then you will love this book and James Rollins as an author. He uses multiple plots and characters to create his suspense, mystery and horror in a real life situation but fictional story.

Started off well, then went downhill. Still an entertaining read, so I will be reading more Rollins.

This is the second Rollins book that read, and it won’t be my last. Just like the last one I read it is full of action and adventure while dealing with interesting topics, Incan civilization, archeology, treasure, ancient traps and the Spanish inquisition. A fun and fast read.

This book would have kicked more ass if it was written by Henry Rollins instead of James Rollins, but you can't have everything.

What Excavation does have going for it is the fertile mind of its' author, who comes up with some truly extraordinary things. The concepts Mr. Rollins writes about are fascinating. I love archeology, I love the Incan civilization, and I love a good adventure story, so my interest was assured.

However Rollins' characters and for that matter, some of their personal dilemmas, are so hackneyed it is painful-did both of the male leads have to feel unrequited love for their colleagues? But Rollins writes in such a way that the reader is carried along at a breakneck pace-and this makes up for a multitude of sins, as it were.
