It's rare that I put a book down but I just couldn't get into this book. Very disappointing but maybe I'll pick it up another time.

I liked this one. The mystery/thriller plot is really just a framework on which the author hangs a fascinating comparison between life in Soviet Russia and the USA.

This is a page-turner worth a read for that reason alone, but it would be especially interesting for younger people who never experienced the Cold War.

    Good mystery. Better love story.

Irina realizes she's in love with him even after her initial dislike because he's police.
    It's very good writing.

Tragic because he sacrifices his freedom for hers.

Leads into the other novels. Arkady is the classic, tragic Russian.

Skip the movie. It doesn't have the passion.

Great book. This is more of a police procedural than a thriller. If you're a fan of "Spy who came in from the cold", you would love this.

To some a masterpiece in crimefiction. They are not far off. It's an amazing example of a very simple plot set against a very complicated background (the former Soviet Union) Through the book you get more insight in the way things worked back then.

Though some parts are a bit too long and detailed in all I really liked the book. Though I guess some people might find it hard to read because of the cast of characters and their non western ways and way of thinking and acting.
