This is the best shark attack book since Jaws.

Yes it's predictable and cliched, but it is still a fun read. There is enough blood and guts for adventure and horror fans and enough real science to snag the more nerdy among us. Ex-sub pilot, and now paleontologist, Jonas Taylor thought he saw a shark, a really BIG shark, in the Mariana Trench. He's spent the years since trying to prove the megalodon might still exist in deep waters. Back in the Challenger Deep Trench to help a friend discover why his earthquake sensors have stopped working he runs into the living proof that his theories are correct. And you guessed it, it's all blood, guts, and destruction on a massive scale from there. The ending really stretches credibility, but it's a fun way to spend a couple of hours if you enjoy death and gore aplenty.

A thriller all the way through. Who does not like a book about a sixty-foot shark?

    Period 1
    Book Review
    10-2-2011

Steve Alten's novel "MEG", starts off with a very detailed description of prehistoric proportions’. He begins in media res, you are immediately thrown into the action as he goes into great detail about a shark called Megaladon attacking a prehistoric creature. Megaladon or "MEG" for short is a type of shark species believed to have gone extinct along with the dinosaurs millions of years ago. This shark is capable of reaching lengths of up to 100 feet and is considered one of if not the best predator of its time, however in this book it is without a doubt the best predator of our time. This is best explained by the character of Jonas Taylor, an ex-deep sea submersible captain who has been discharged due to an accident ending with two deaths while the submersible was under his control. He tries to explain that it was not due to his actions that two people died but rather that they were attacked within the Marianas Trench and it was because of his actions that any made it out alive. Instead of being believed, he is fired from his job and considered nothing more than a wacko. When you start the book this incident is old news and he has been a scientist since seven years ago when he was discharged. Now there have been new developments in technology and Jonas is asked by an institution to pilot a deep sea submersible into the Marianas Trench. It is on this excursion that the book gets fun and the action really starts. During each and every encounter with the prehistoric beast Steve Alten does an excellent job of truly dazzling his readers with the vivid descriptions he divulges into. The heart pounding scenes are never in short supply and believe me that’s an excellent thing because after reading about the first attack you cant wait to get to another one. Steve Alten delivers the experience of a life time and never falls short of doing so throughout the entire course of his novel. However this novel isn’t just blood and guts, this novels plot point although simple is very well constructed and explained. There are no holes and you will never find yourself lost or feeling like you have missed some information that would tie the story together otherwise. I believe this book is a truly excellent read and i would suggest it to anyone and everyone who likes action and adventure. There is never a moment when you go to long without a thrilling scene that draws you back into the book and leaves you always wanting more. Throughout the book the action builds and builds until finally you get to the final scene and the climax of the book is revealed. I cannot tell you how the book ends because that would spoil it but what I can do is tell you that just the end scene is well worth the read. This book will leave you speechless and you will most likely want to go out and get the others in the series the moment you finish this one and set it down.
