Didn’t Like It“This was the first Jules Verne book I read. I guess I was expecting more and was somewhat disappointed. I had expected a more intense and bigger adventure. Maybe I have been spoiled by all the Captain Nemo and 20,000 league movies. Quick read and simple plot.” see full review » see other reviews » |

From Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne
When I began reading this, I didn't realize that it was followed by a sequel. For some reason this is the only Jules Verne that I have not read over the years. I must say that it is a bit more dry and tedious than his other books. He tends to go on and on about the scientific and mechanical things which are required to launch a missile to the moon by the Gun Club.
The Gun Club, having no current wars on which topractice their craft, was in need of a project. Thus it was decided by the president of the club, Impey Barbicane, that they should endeavor to send a craft to the moon. The club set about creating a 900 foot iron cannon, set underground near Tampa Town, Florida. The rest of the book consists of the various plans and implementations of said plans to ultimately send 3 men and 2 dogs to the moon. A voyage of no return.”
“ I found this book amusing. Not because of the writing but because it was written in 1865 about a moon voyage via a cannon. The local gun club is despondant because there are no more wars to make cannons for and their president comes up with a scheme to send a projectile to the moon. It's very creative especially for a time when moon travel wasn't even considered. In some ways the book is very boring he goes on and on about mathmaticla equations and moon rotations, the qualities of defferent metals and gun powder, etc. All the different particulars about building the projectile and getting it to work. It becomes a little like your in a science class. On the other hand it is fascinating because he is so close to correct and sometimes spot on to the truth that we now know. He must have been very intelligent! I was entertained.”
