Sloppy Firsts: A Novel

by Megan Mccafferty

“My parents suck ass. Banning me from the phone and restricting my computer privileges are the most tyrannical parental gestures I can think of. Don’t they realize that Hope’s the only one who keeps me sane? . . . I don’t see how things could get any worse.”

When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyperobservant... (read more)

Classic teen angst novel. A good book for teenage girls.

Jessica Darling is one of my favorite literary characters! She has razor-sharp wit and knows how to use it. This book is probably one of the only two books that's made me laugh out loud. Jessica's experiences are told through journal entries; she writes about how much she can't stand the Clueless Crew, how she misses her best friend Hope and how one mysterious dreg seems to understand her better than herself. Five stars, all the way!

When her best friend, Hope Weaver, moves away from Pineville, New Jersey, hyper observant sixteen-year-old Jessica Darling is devastated. A fish out of water at school and a stranger at home, Jessica feels more lost than ever now that the only person with whom she could really communicate has gone. How is she supposed to deal with the boy- and shopping-crazy girls at school, her dad’s obsession with her track meets, her mother salivating over big sister Bethany’s lavish wedding, and her nonexistent love life?

This novel was a little crazed at some points. But it was a great novel. The plot was very original and fun. Jessica Darling is a comical and savvy character. There was less dialog then I expected and some of the characters were unreal-ish. There were a lot of different things going on in this story, like two different plots in one.

I read it seven years after it was published so it was pretty fun remembering all the music sensations and styles in that time.

This was really just a fun, quick read. I loved it and I cannot wait to get the rest of the series read!

I actually snagged this novel out of my library's Young Adult section...word of caution I strongly feel this book (and the entire Jessica Darling series) should be classified as an adult some of the subject matter is tender. It's definitely a "take you back to teen angst days" for an adult reader. If I were a Mom I'd give it a read before allowing my teen daughter to dive in.

This book was great although I was not happy with how the whole Marcus situation turned out.I think she was being really hypacritical about the easedropping.

5 stars because Jess was the girl I wanted to be when I was 16! Haha. I toted Megan McCaffertey books a lot back in high school... I'd read it during boring lectures in the classroom. Jessica Darling is still one of my favorite characters from any book. She was my heroine at that point in time, kind of like because I was experiencing the same things as she was when I was reading the series...only, I didn't deal with things the way she did - she was smart mouthed, witty, angry at the world, and eloquent in this dirty mouthed kind of way which I totally admired back then. Go figure, I was 16 then. Nostalgic.

I loved this book. It's a great beach read...nothing serious about these books. Try all of them. You'll enjoy!
