Highly experimental....Scottish (go figure that one)...thin on plot...brilliant on weird....good on character. If you can live with a threadbare plot and love brilliant writing then I would highly recommend this book.

    Amazon.com:
A modern vision of hell, Lanark is set in the disintegrating cities of Unthank and Glasgow, and tells the interwoven stories of Lanark and Duncan Thaw. A work of extraordinary imagination and wide range, its playful narrative techniques convey a profound message, both personal and political, about humankind's inability to love, and yet our compulsion to go on trying. Widely recognized as a modern classic, Alasdair Gray's magnum opus was first published in 1981 and immediately established him as one of Britain's leading writers. Comparisons have been made to Dante, Blake, Joyce, Orwell, Kafka, Huxley, and Lewis Carroll. This new edition should cement his reputation as one of our greatest living writers.

I'm so glad I read this! I've read some of his other books and enjoyed them, but apparently this is his masterpiece and lifework. It was really fabulous and creative, and I think it has something for everyone.

A kind of bizarre tale about the after-life and its kind of Orwellian atmosphere. I thought this book was written in the 18 century, it's writing and themes seem antiquated, but if done on purpose, then higher marks due.

I hadn't heard of Alisdair Gray previously but was interested in reading some Scottish authors, and he seems well regarded. My closest reference seems to be Kafka. I thought it was worth reading, and will keep my eyes open for other books by this author.

What can you say about Alasdair Gray? A very strange journey indeed. Kinda Joyce meets Vonnegut with a Scottish accent.
