It may have been a bit too long, but it was very interesting. It shows Gray's capability of writing in two very different styles, with both aspects of the novel very well constructed.
Personally, I liked the bildungsroman more, although i enjoyed going through the fantastic scenery as well. The dystopian world presented is Thaw's personal hell, and it criticises some of the modern world's aspects. I usually don't enjoy the assosiation of present society with evil, and that is why the book is not my favourite, but overall, it was an enjoyable read, due to it's substance and most of all character developpment.

Do you like his others? I've read most of them and while I like his Scottish Nationalism book I don't find any of his other novels as satisfying as Lanark. A brilliant book that blends dystopia and bildungsroman.

Year after year, it remains my favorite book. Such a heart-rending look at people and their undying search for love in an strange, fantastical, soulless world. This book is long and epic; a critique on modern life that makes the reader turn inward (then into surreal territory) to see what the western world has become. It also has intricate and beautiful drawings by the author that introduce each chapter.
