I have tried and tried to get my friends to read The Tortilla Curtain. Too dark, is their excuse. I find this novel to be wonderfully funny, terrible, ironic, and gut wrenching. We have two couples, one Mexican, one middle class Californian, who come together when the white husband...

Boyle's best in my opinion. A short but great read that serves to remind that we're all the same under the skin.

The main character is a holier-than-thou putz. I hate that.

This was a difficult read for me. Painful to get through, in fact. I endured for an anthropology course I was taking. I just didn't appreciate any part of the writing style or anything. It's not often that I dislike a book so much but I definitely did not care for this one.

Lives of a wealthy environmentalist and a poor Mexican couple, "illegals" just trying to get work and a new life, intersect and contrast hugely in this somewhat disturbing novel. I look forward to plenty of book-club discussion of the book's huge contrasts and ironies.

provocative, disturbing, haunting account of the illegal alien situation in CA and probably the whole US. Presented in a way that you understand both sides of the issue which leaves you sad, frustrated, and depressed.
