I read this one a long, long time ago, but i still clearly remember the scene where the Bird shoots Ritchie and lets Carmen go upstairs to change. The Bird is a spiratual character. He's a philosopher and a killer, and he's just going to sit there at that table and drink whiskey and when the woman comes down the stairs he'll shoot her and end it all... That's it. The Bird is so much different than any of Leonard's other heavies. I think it is because all the other characters in all the other novels know that they are fucked, and they don't plan on changing. But the bird is different. He's thinking about doing something else with his life. He's had it. He just might fly away... If he's lucky.

Good book. Lots of fun to read. More expression of internal processes where some mystery thrillers keep the writing at the surface as if the reader were seeing a movie. This books goes inwards. That is not a plus or a minus for the book, just a difference, though it did make the book more difficult for me to get into. However, once past the first few pages, I was hooked and finished the book in two sittings. I recommend it.
