Why did I love this book? Two words: Raylan Givens, my favorite modern day cowboy with a fondness for ice cream.

Pronto, however, is not exclusively Raylan's story, though he figures as a prominent character once he does arrive on the scene. This is actually the story of Harry Arno,...

I just want to say, that if it really is to be believed that Harry Arno took 47 years to plan his "retirement", he sucks! What a terrible plan! But deputy United States marshal Raylan Givens, now there's the man! The Zip shoulda' listened! But the Ezra Pound stuff, yuck.

I purchased this book strictly due to my love of the TV show Justified, and am planning on reading all of the Raylan Givens books. Realizing that the show is based on Fire in the Hole, and not this particular book, I still found myself a little disappointed and distracted. Raylan has two kids? No he doesn't! His family lives in Detroit? Not in my world. If I came into this book blind, I would have enjoyed it more, for sure. But still, take away the comparisons between this version of Raylan and the TV version, it was still kind of a slow story with not very much happening. I didn't care at all about Harry Arno or Jimmy Cap. The Zip was somewhat interesting, albeit very one dimensional. Elmore Leonard is very talented, so it was still 3-star worthy.

I only wish I could write like this. Elmore is more than a writer... He is a storyteller.

First Elmore Leonard (and Raylan Givens). Looking forward to more. Great characters, easy read.

An excellent book. This book introduces Raylan Givens the basis for the FX series Justified.

When a bookmaker is set up by the Feds in a bid to make him turn on his boss, the boss sends out some hired guns to clean it up. So the bookmaker skips town, and U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens chases after him to Italy, where he has a showdown with the bad guys on their own turf. Another tale of crime, deceit, and double crosses -- and all the bizarre characters involved -- from master crime writer Elmore Leonard.

Build up to Rayland's Miami justified shoot out. Leonard ambles through this crime caper with Rayland's style.

Harry Arno is a bookie for a small-time Miami gangster. When the Feds set him up as a means of taking down his boss, he skips the country with the bankroll of funds he's been skimming off the top through the years and moves to a small town in Italy he remembers from WWII. But when he sends word back to his girlfriend to come join him, that tips off the mobster's hit man, Tommy Bucks (aka "the Zip"). Also on his tail is the Federal Marshall who he gave the slip, one Raylen Givens.
Those who watch the TV show Justified know Givens, and he is readily recognizable here with his Kentucky background and his cowboy hat. Due mostly to the setting, this book has a somewhat different "feel" than the show, but there are familiarities. The books ends with the same scene that kicks off the TV show's first episode, although with different details.
