- Captain Katherine Janeway: Captain of the starship Voyager. Her crew was lost 70,000 light years from home in the Delta Quadrant.
- Commander Chakotay: A former Maquis, a rebel group opposed to the Federation/Cardassian agreement to turn over worlds with Federation citizens residing. His ship was lost with Voyager and combined crews in an attempt to return home.
- Lt Belanna Torres: The half human and half Klingon chief engineer for Voyager. Like Chakotay, she too, is a former Maquis.
- Lt Tom Paris: Voyager's pilot. He was once a Maquis who got caught and was in a penal colony in New Zealand before being released to help Capt Janeway track down Chakotay's ship.
