The Hobbit

by J. R. R. Tolkien

"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
The hobbit-hole in question belongs to one Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of a "little people, about half our height, and smaller than... (read more)

While this is a "children's book" it is by no means childish. Tolkien writes sheer magic, the battle of good and evil. I loved it so much I married a Hobbit.

"The Hobbit" holds the esteemed place in my heart and bookshelf as being the first book I ever really loved. My Aunt Debbie, who always gives us books for presents, gave me a copy when I was 10. I struggled through it, but was rewarded by its timeless story and beloved protagonists. It's clear that Tolkien cherished every blade of grass, every rock, and every tree in Middle Earth, and that sentiment transcends to his countless fans.

I re-read "The Hobbit" earlier this year, just because I had re-read all of The Lord of The Rings series and "The Children of Hurin" and hadn't gotten Tolkien out of my system. It is completely worth the re-read.

This is where it all began. The first book of the story of the ring. Even though it's supposed to be a children's book it's an awesome story. It's got elves, dwarves, orcs, wizards and everything a fantasy fan can want. Plus it pretty much started high fantasy as a genre of books. One of amy all time favorite series. Highly recommended

An amazing tale of a 'hobbit'.. The way it is portrayed, character's description, rituals of different races like dwarfs, hobbits, wizards, dragons, humans all are superb... truly a master piece from the king of fantacies..

This is classic stuff, and it is slower to get into than more modern writing styles. But it is well worth the investment if you are a fantasy reader. Read it before they make a movie out of it!

    Robert of Ravenclaw: 5 stars

Michelle H said: 3 stars. It was disappointing. I don't know if I had too high expectations or if it was the book. The story and writing was just ok to me.

I would save this book because it is so incredibly imaginative and fun to read. Bilbo is a fun character to read about and I don't think this book could ever really get old!

I read this book in the 8th grade. my father pushed me to read it. I didn“t quite get it and ended up reading it over again in highschool. the second time around i got it. This book is not in LA1, but if you really want to read it, buy it. this is a book everyone should have in their personal library.

OK ... What could be written about The Hobbit that hasn't been already , if you don't know anything about this book or The Lord of the Rings series you have been living under a rock.
What got me started re-reading this was that I was going to watch the LOR movies and decided not to watch until I read the novels again.
When reading, one must keep in mind that The Hobbit was written in 1937, and because of this, telling a story was just that, teling a story. If not, one would get the idea that much could be cut from the book ..
Enjoyed it just as much as when I read it in my teens. As always, whenever I re-read a well written novel, there is always something new that I get out of it now that I am older.
It does not hurt that the charaters are cool as well My Presious ....
