I started reading it and I find I understand it better after seeing lord of the rings then I would if i didn't see the movie.. No doubt this is a difficult and confusing book to someone who has never seen or heard of LOTR however some people might find it interesting if they have a very wild and talented imagination :)

Are there any other books worth reading by Tolkien besides the Trilogy and the Hobbit?

The Hobbit was first read to me by my father when I was VERY young and then as I grew old enough to read it myself, I dove into it. I have read it more times than I can enumerate and it will be a life companion of mine. I love the "Rings" trilogy as well and consider myself somewhat of a Tolkien-ite.
For those who say it is a confusing book or that it is not good for a younger person... I would have to beg to differ. However, I do take into account that the world has become more apt toward the obvious and the immediate, so I can see that this is NOT that sort of read. When you are ready to settle in, open your mind and drink slowly from a true author instead of the "cable TV" version of a book, then pick up the Hobbit or the "Rings" books. You will find an amazing beauty and depth there, believe me.

spasmann -- It is not good for a 7th grader. I got this as required reading for my 8th grade class and found it incredibly boring. I had to quit hoping it would get better once I hit chapter 8. It just never picks up speed.

Wonderful book with the beauty and meaning of The Lord of the Rings, but the simplicity of the Chronicles of Narnia.

This is a real masterpiece. When you listen to it on audio it comes to life. All the characters the sound effects the whole book is a play for the ears. The whole series of J. R. R. Tokien is fantastic on audio, so find the CD or tape version of the series and start listening to it as you clean house, or drive to work or whatever, you will not be disappointed.
