Iyer’s travel volume is a travel narrative that catapults the reader through many nations, but this is not necessarily what one takes away from the book. The firm impression I get is that I could have made the same journey along with the narrator without either of us having left the room; Sun After Dark is only a travel narrative in the loosest sense. I think Iyer takes great pains to present the physical mobility in a way that mute’s the actual travel in lieu of beautiful feeling regarding thought and inner turmoil, rendered in such a way that puts the grit, so to speak, in the teeth of the reader without that reader having ever left the room. I’m not easily carried from place to place by any work of art, but Iyer moves me.
