“The mother of all space operas. It is the overall story of CJ Cherryh's universe, its history and political manueverings and above all a story on what it means to be human and the cost of humanity in environments not suited for humans. This is a must read for any Cherryh fan who wants to immerse themselves into the Alliance-Union universe. The next book is Psychogenesis as well as Downbelow Station. The book 40,000 In Gehenna is also part of this storyline since it was initiated by the characters in this book. The Chanur chronicles are also set in this universe and is alluded to in Cyteen. Merchanter's Luck and other books are stories in this universal history.”

Although the politicking part is strong, the best part is the convincing society and the strifebetween Earth and former colonies. Strongly believable is a scenario where when new living space (planets) is found the Earthly (geo)political and economical conflicts and even wars will remain the same, though on a larger scale. The book is well crafted, obviously афтер years of efforts. The main characters are well built, with complex relationships, but the main virtue lies on the social experiment conducted in the writing laboratory of C.J.Cherryh...”

Utterly pointless IMHO”
“This was on my HSC booklist for English Extension One. It looked very intimidating when I first laid eyes on it- it rivaled my 3 Unit Math book in thickness. The bland cover did little to spur me to read it until necessary- nor did the italic font in the first verbal text (which I had to read a few times because the text seemed to blur into a mass of mush). However, when I got a good deal into it- chapter four or so- it was difficult to put down. Analysing it as a text was wonderful; plenty to talk about concerning human nature and various other issues.
The plot is an intriguing web of mystery, powerplay, politics, science and human emotion. Watching Ariane grow up was engaging and the nature verus nuture debate it sparked in the classroom was quite interesting. A great read- although I found the ending to be lacking; but maybe its just me.”
“I didn't like it too much on first reading. But it stuck with me enough that I re-read it. Several times in fact. And each time I liked it more until now it's one of my favourites. Certainly not easy reading and not just entertainment. It's about political intrigues, manipulation, motivations and the question whether one can form a character/mind according to one's wishes (not the ethics so much as the mechanics).”

The story begins by exploring the question of nature versus nurture in the creation of a person but then goes on to explore relationships, power and community. An must read for anyone who is puzzled by the ways of power and relationships.”
