This books is quite challenging and helpful. It is divided into four sections.

Section 1 Grace and Discipleship contained a discussion of cheap grace vs costly grace. I found the following sentence particularly helpful, "The cross is not the terrible end to an otherwise God-fearing and happy life, but it meets us at the beginning of our communion with Christ. When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die."

Section 2 is a long analysis of the Sermon on the Mount which builds on the grace discussion in section 1.

I found sections 3 and 4 less helpful, but they may stand out more in a future rereading.

One of the most important theologians of the twentieth century illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat?

Early in my Christian life, someone gave me a copy of The Cost of Discipleship. The author is well known not only for his writing, but the fact that his faith and courage in opposing Hitler’s persecution of the Jews resulted in what he called “costly grace” in his book – his own martyrdom. Every Christian would do well to read his comparison of “cheap grace” and “costly grace.”

Bonhoeffer's classic tome is the definitive work on the relationship between justification and sanctification, which he sums up in the term "costly grace."
