Of an ill-fated love affair..... of spousal love and commitments... of sibling affection..... of parental devotion.... of tenderness... of selfishness.... of malady..... of longings....of fondness..... of sacrifices....... of warmth...... of weakness.... of understanding...In short "Family Matters".
An uncomplicated story of complicated family affairs.

I did not find this book either charming or literally stimulating. I have not found a genuine literary 'spark' that naturally strikes in the narration. Apparently, Mistry tried to be close to emotions that the later phases of life evoke, but keeping a contemporary commentary running out of usual incidents of such lives cannot be sometimes called a literary piece especially without that charm in the narration that connects the reader with the characters. A poor read, indeed.

I think Family Matters is a decent book, but a far cry from his excellent previous work (especially A Fine Balance). But this is a great book for its description of the problems the family faces in India, and actually seems interesting to read against A Fine Balance, which takes place during Indira Gandhi's government in the same country. Interesting how the concerns have shifted somewhat, both politically and at the basic level of how families deal with tragedy and poverty.
