This is book about the McKettrick Family of the Arizona Territory set in the 1880's. The McKettrick patriarch is Angus McKettrick and he is sick and tired of having no grandchildren so he gathers his three son's and issues them a challenge....the first one to get married and produce and heir will inherit the entire Triple M ranch! Rafe is the first one to make an attempt at marrying by ordering from a mail order bride catalog! The result comes in the form of Emmeline Harding. She is escaping from her life in Kansas City, where she has been raised by an aunt who runs a brothel! Emmeline makes the decision to leave after she spends a very careless night, pretending to be a lady of the evening and ends up sleeping in the same room with a man named, Holt Cavanaugh. She awakens not quite remembering what went on that night and decides to become a mail order bride to insure that she will be married in case she comes up pregnant. When she finally has her first meeting with Rafe, the one she's been summoned to marry...she is utterly appalled! He comes flying out of a saloon, drunk and dirty from a bar fight!His younger brother, Kade actually takes her home to the ranch where she meets up with the entire family. The rest of the book is how her and Rafe become better acquainted and grow to tolerate each other. Will they find love? Will they finally marry? Will they produce the heir and win the ranch? You will have to read it to find out.

  • Emmeline Harding: She is not accepted by most of her peers or their families because she lives at Miss Becky's Boardinghouse. She marries Rafe McKettrick by proxy through the mail-order agency. She has blond hair and gray-green eyes.
  • Angus McKettrick: Patriarch of the McKettrick family. Father of Holt, Rafe, Kade and Jeb. Married to Ellie who died during childbirth and Georgia who died 15 years ago.
  • Becky Harding: Emmeline's aunt who runs a "boarding house"/brothel
  • Kade McKettrick: Middle son of Angus and Georgia. He's 27 years old with chestnut hair and green eyes.
  • Jeb McKettrick: Youngest son of Angus McKettrick. He's 20 years old and has blue eyes.
  • Holt: Angus' oldest son with his first wife Ellie who died during his birth. He has wavy brown hair and hazel eyes.
  • Phoebe Anne Pelton: Young pregnant woman who, along with her husband, is a homesteader on the McKettrick land. Concepcion and Emmeline are offering aid.
  • Concepcion: Housekeeper for the McKettrick family.
