“Helen has been a ghost for a very long time. She's had several different hosts, but none have been as wonderful as Mr. Brown. All of this changes, when one day she realizes someone is looking at her. Not through her, but AT her, like they can see her. James was once what Helen was, too...until he occupied the empty body of Billy. Now, he is in human form, but can also see those who haven't been accepted into heaven, like Helen. Because of their shared life, they fall in love and James teaches Helen how to occupy Jenny, that way they can really be together. But Jenny's life is a horrible life for Helen. Constantly being told to pray, and not being allowed to see James because he doesn't go to church. And when her "family" begins falling apart, and James learns how to get out of Billy's body, Helen has nothing to live for anymore. But how do you kill yourself when you're already dead?”

I don't know what i was expecting but the ending left me saddened for some reason, instead of satisfied. I am happy though with Billy and Jenny's ending, I'm glad they found each other in the end despite the fact that they had absolutely no idea how they knew each other (throwing their fates on that one polaroid picture Billy found in his room). How they were going to deal with the fact of Jenny's pregnancy was left unanswered though and that was disappointing. It was kinda true what one reviewer said that it seemed disgusting somehow how the 2 ghosts jumped into people's bodies just so they can have sex, then jumped back out at their convenience, leaving a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl pregnant and having no idea who the other person is. While that is not the point of the story, I'm sure, when put that way, it seemed selfish somehow....I'm giving it a 3 because the story's a unique concept, it was compelling in that it kept me wanting to find out what happens next.”

I kept having a feeling, that something horrible was going to happen, but "nothing" really did. I think I just mistook the essense of becoming and being a lost soul as a foreshadowing of something awful.
Although I liked that their past lives were mystery and the lovers' adventure was changing and evolving all the time, it all seemed a bit messy and unstructured to me.
I was captured by the romance, but was really mesmerized by the book's theme spirituality and belief.
I'm almost giving it four stars!”
“This is quite possibly my number one favorite YA book to date. Laura Whitcomb has written literature, that flows beautifully and comes alive. I can hear, feel and sense her characters as they float, run and love.
Involving a small cast of equal, important and lost characters. Helen is a ghost that has been lovingly watching Mr. Brown, a high school english teacher she has been haunting and watching from corners and rooms through out his life. After 130 years of 'haunting' and watching her subjects, a student (James) of Mr. Brown sees her as concrete as if she were human. James is alas not attracting a spirit but is a spirit himself, occupying a human body. In mere moments a heavy, strong bond is formed between the two wandering spirits. Once Helen learns that she can occupy a body, she is faced with the heavy task of leaving her beloved Mr. Brown, but this is just the beginning of what is to come after she occupies a body named Jenny...
You will just have to trust me and read this beautiful book!”
“This is such a good book! I have the paperback edtion.
It's a little hard to get into at first, but if you persist, it's completely worth it. A somewhat startling look at two completely different ways of life.”
“Looks creepy, but the book was really good in my opinion.”

They belong to a boy, a boy who has not seemed remarkable until now. And Helen—terrified, but intrigued—is drawn to him. The fact that he is in a body and she is not presents this unlikely couple with their first challenge. But as the lovers struggle to find a way to be together, they begin to discover the secrets of their former lives and of the young people they come to possess.

“LOVED it, till the end which seemed a little overwrought and heavy handed in its attempts to give "meaning" and wrap everything up perfectly. Something subtler or even a bit ambivalent would have worked better for me.”
