• Nicky Dillon: A twelve year old girl who has lost her mother and baby sister to a car wreck. Her father moves them from their memory filled Westchester, NY home to rural Shepherd, NH. She paints a mural of the New England ski slopes on her bedroom walls - snow topping the ones she's skiied. She makes beaded jewelry.
• Robert Dillon: Nicky's father, 42, - former NYC architect turned furniture building recluse in Shepherd, NH after his wife and baby daughter Clara were killed in a car accident two weeks before Christmas two years ago.
• Sweetser: Man at the hardware store in the no-man's-land between Hanover and Concord, NH
• Dr. Gibson: doctor who cares for baby the Dillons find in the snow in the woods beyond their home.
• Chief Boyd: one of two Shepherd, NH police officers. Tommy Boyd's father
• George Warren: NH State Police detective investigating Baby Doris's abandonment. Wife Mary, Has two sons, 8 & 10. Younger one, Tommy is autistic.
• Clara: Nicky's baby sister who died in the car accident with their mom two years earlier
• Baby Doris: baby Robert and Nicky find abandoned in the woods in the snow
• Charlotte Thiel: 19 year old unwed mother of Baby Doris. Dropped out of college. Family is religious, French-Canadian, strict. Two older brothers.
• James Lamont: father of the baby. college student, 19-20. dark wavy hair, green-eyed, front teeth capped from hockey playing, not very tall, navy peacoat
• Steve: used to work in same firm in NYC with Robert. He and Virginia, his wife /girlfriend locate the Dillons while on a skiing trip
• Remy: Owns local market
• Marion: Lady who works at Remys. A large red haired woman who married her sister's husband, Jimmy, after a historic affair. One son is ay UNH the other in prison for armed robbery. She's a knitter.
• Phillip: former co worker of Steven and Robert in NYC
• Tara Rice: Westchester, NY friend with whom Nicky stayed when her baby sister was born, and the night she died
• Jo: tall, blonde haired NH girl friend Nicky goes skiing with
• Grammie: Nickys 73 year old Indianna grandmother
• Peggy: Town clerk
• Jake: 8 year old brother of Jonah - 9 or 10, and white haired beglassed 6-7 yr old Jeremy who live with their mother Leslie in cottage on road up to Dillon's house.
