“Interesting point of view.”

Donald Miller unpacks the modernist formulaic view of Christianity and replaced with what I believe is a more Biblical view of God. Miller presents the idea that we have a formulaic view of God. We try to put him in a box. We’ve tried to figure God out. We have made formulas that tell us how to be saved and how to grow closer to God. We have formulas explaining God. All these formulas tell us how to develop a relationship. The problem is that one can go through the formulas without really having a relationship. That is the problem. The problem is not the formulas, it is the lack of relationship. Sometimes the formulas do help. Systematic theologies are beneficial, but they alone cannot give someone a relationship with God. Really, what this Christianity thing is all about is a relationship. This has really changed the way that I look at the faith.”

I felt like there were a few historical inaccuracies that didn't necessarily matter much to his larger points, but did take away from my overall enjoyment. I felt that Chapter 5, Naked, was one of the best chapters of any book in this non-fiction, quasi-theological/quasi self-help, hard to place genre. However, the back third of this book did tend to drag on a bit. He somehow lost that humor and perspective that drew me in at the beginning. I felt the same about Blue Like Jazz, the only other book of his that I've read. But overall, it was very good and the ideas presented were reasonably novel and well-presented.”

I love how in this book he uses scripture to challenge "the way it's always been" mentality of Christian culture, showing that most of these ideas have no biblical base. I especially enjoyed the chapter concerning Jesus' political party. . .i.e. the fact He doesn't have one!”
