I have read a bit of this book and like it so far. It is the fifth book in the series but it is like a prequel, so you read it after you've read book 1, 2, 3 and 4 (otherwise you wouldn't understand it). very adult. i read it as a 12 year old and wanted to skip a lot of it, but sadly, those parts that i wanted to skip had important information. other than that, it helped explain the other books in the otori series. it was thrilling, action packed, and pretty well writen. i wish that there had been less romance, but oh well, it's an adult book, what do you expect.

This book got me hooked on Lian's Tales of the Otori series. Clean writing, great action and wonderful characters. Top notch fantasy fic for the feudal Japan set.

This is a great prequel to the Tale of the Otori. It is a stand alone book, you can read this one before or after the others. I read it after the trilogy. I recommend the entire Tale of the Otori to anyone. I have not read a set of books this good since, Since the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit prequel.

This is the prequel to the Tales of Otori series. I'm not sure but I think it should be read after reading the others, although now I want to reread the others. I love the idea of a fantasy series set in some place like old Japan.

I like this series a lot. Plenty of action, some romance, martial arts, unusual powers... what's not to like? I have another couple to go yet.

Loved to bits, but was disappointed Hearn included the irrelevant attraction factor between Shizuka and Shigeru - it felt like a betrayal to both Arai and Naomi for me. However, the book itself was a revealing look into Shigeru's life before Takeo and I enjoyed that. I was only sorry for Akane who chose Shigeru (wrongly, I thought) over the merchant who loved her long before Lord Otori had a claim on her. Great story though - moving and as ever, the Abbott of Terayama was my favourite character to encounter.

Actually a prequel to the terrific trilogy "The Tales of the Otori", this book really sets up the trilogy. I really enjoyed it, and if I were to recommend the series, I'd almost say to read this one first. It's not historically accurate, except for the details of day to day life, but the author admits that she made up the clans, and the territories. It takes nothing away from the narrative. It's well written, the characters are well fleshed-out, and has great plotting. For those of you with a yen for a Japan that never was, this is your book.
