Alias Grace is based on real-life events about a teenage housemaid, the Grace of the title, who was imprisoned for murdering her employer in 19th century Canada. The story is told from Grace's point of view when she has already been in prison for 10 years and is being evaluated by a psychiatrist. It's a delicious unreliable narrator story, where you are aware that Grace is withholding information from the doctor, from you, and from herself. It's one big did-she or didn't-she novel with much detail about 19th century life and the life of a domestic servant.
