Suite Francaise

by Irene Nemirovsky

Beginning in Paris on the eve of the Nazi occupation in 1940. Suite Française tells the remarkable story of men and women thrown together in circumstances beyond their control. As Parisians flee the city, human folly surfaces in every imaginable way: a wealthy mother searches for sweets in a town without food; a couple is terrified at the thought of losing their jobs, even as their world begins... What I really loved about this book

is also the sorrow of this book. Because Irene Nemirovsky was lost in the horror of WWII, she has sadly and unfairly but truly given us a great gift. As a history teacher, it was so meaningful to me to read a novel about the people of France during the war and as they were invaded by the Germans which was completely without the influence of the author knowing later history. It feels horrible for me to even say so because I would of course much preferred that she had lived to raise her girls and write more. But I also know that had she lived, she would have written a beautiful 5 novel piece as she had planned but it would have been edited and no author can help including later knowledge because as time moves on it becomes part of a person. So, the thing I loved about the novel is that it brought me back to that time in very real terms - the people feel real - they are multifaceted as people should be. So, I loved it, and I couldn't put it down, and in the end cried for the loss of this wife and mother.

I had never read such a cool description of France under Nazi occupation.
It looks like the French accepted easily the Germans. Mostly they complained about some property damage, their silverware.......
Being humiliated for the third time in less than a century by the Germans is no big deal for most of them.
This book is, to my mind, mostly a big praise to those who are absent from it - De-Gaule and the Resistance
Beautifully Written

Just finished reading Suite Francaise. Read the reviews before sending this, and was disappointed some did not like this book. It is one of the few books I've read about WWII told from a totally humanistic perspective. What's interesting, is the story is told in real time, as the events are happening. Sorry she never was able to complete the series. Her death is a loss for those who appreciate fine literature.
A Wonderful Experience

Suite Francaise is an excellently written, moving book which I have recommended to all of my friends. The loss of such a wonderful writer is truly tragic but how very lucky we are to have had this writing survive!

This book is an excellent fiction/non-fiction account of a people, or rather persons, that go through WW2. It is a fiction story based on a non-fiction event. The notes of the author after the story are fascinating.
