“A great dystopia, but with cute farm animals! (Hence the title). I love the progression of the pigs into humans, and the comparison between each pg leader and an actual dictator was dead-on.”

I fell in love with this, and don't tell anyone, but I might've liked it more than 1984. :D
I will work harder!”
“Animal Farm is allegorical. Animal Farm starts with animals rebelling against the farm keeper, Jones. At first, everyone is fair and works hard, but as the story goes on, the smart pig, Napoleon kicks the other smart pig out becomes king of the farm. Napoleon makes the farm not fair again. This is same as the development of Communism in Russia”

It gets you thinking so much about the world and humanity and issues you don't usually think about. I don't think about them that much, at least. The comparisons and metaphors make reading the book so much more than it could be if taken completely literally. Fortunately I can recognize the flawless comparisons that are made. It's one of my favorite books now, and I plan on reading it again.”

The transformation of this farm parallels that of the change within Russia during the Russian Revolution and the following years. The location of the animal-ran farm between two human farms is a way to show the effects of Communist Russia on neighboring countries. This setting affects the security of the human farms, creating fear of animal uprisings and causing the humans to attack and eventually be defeated by the animals of Manor Farm. The setting of the novel affects the tone by giving the story a feeling of newfound freedom and impending exploitation. The novel has this tone because the animals are able to revolt against their farmer, Mr. Jones, and establish a new society of an animal-only farm.
One of the major characters in Animal Farm is the pig, Napoleon. Napoleon is one of the two leaders of the Animal Farm and eventual lone animal in power. He was a clever character who was always scheming and operating under the radar only in the interest of himself, never for the good of the farm animals. Napoleon’s tendency to be absent of contributions in farm meetings contrasted with that of his counterpart, Snowball, who constantly voiced his opinions to force his ideology onto the rest of the animals. The only seemingly good intentioned contribution Napoleon made was training the litter of newborn puppies, but this was actually all a part of his plans to gain sole control over the entire farm when those puppies grew up to be Napoleon’s personal police force. Napoleon was modeled off of the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and shares his strategy of rising to power. Napoleon manipulates and intimidates the animals of the farm just as Stalin did with the people of Russia. The motives of Napoleon are fueled by his own selfish desires of power and displays all of the qualities of a totalitarian dictator.
One of the characters that affected the plot of the novel the most is Old Major. Old Major plants the seeds of Animalism and the revolution that takes place on Manor Farm. He gives the animals the idea that they were being used as slaves by Mr. Jones and should do things collectively for the better of their farm society. Old Major’s impact on the plot is felt throughout the whole story. Every idea from Snowball and Napoleon stem from the beliefs of Old Major which influences the ideology of the farm. Without Old Major, the animal revolution on Manor Farm would have never happened.
Animal Farm is a thought-provoking novel which creatively personifies communist versus capitalist society. Hardships suffered by the animals of the farm lead to a collective sense of unity and leads to the overthrowing of their human farmer. With a call for leadership, the clever pigs claim power and implant their vision of a society in the best interest of the animals. The unwillingness and ignorance of the animals allow the pigs to gain an unfair amount of power over the farm. The wit and force of Napoleon lead him to become the undisputed dictator over the farm and give him the ability to oppress the animals. The superiority of pigs over the years cause Napoleon to consider his power the same as humans and reverts the levels of animals and farmer. Thus, repeating the cycle of aristocrats and common people. Animal Farm is a wonderful story that is strongly recommended to all readers.

“Animal Farm takes place from the early 1930s to the late 1940s in England at a place called Manor Farm. The animals represent citizens in a communist state (Russia). Because of its totalitarian representation, there is an authoritarian mood throughout the story.
Old Major was an intelligent, rebellious character. He was a wise, kingly pig who every animal in the farm looked up to. After his death, his speech and words rang in the ears of every animal, and caused a rebellion at Manor Farm.
Napoleon was a large, fierce boar who always got his way. He changed the entirety of Manor Farm and the lives of all animals. In the beginning, he acted as the benevolent ruler, but soon destroyed the principles of democracy under which the farm was to be ran. He made the pigs better than the other animals, and changed the farm from freedom to tyranny.
Animal Farm is an exciting, yet frightening story that warns about the dangers of communism in an allegorical representation of a farm. It represents the overthrow of initial tyranny, the rise of democracy, then the deep plunge back into tyranny that many states go through. Overall, I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys an interesting, different way of looking at communism.”
