Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the henhouses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the pop-holes. As soon as the light in the bedroom went out there was a stirring and a fluttering all through the farm buildings. Word had gone round during the day that old Major, the prize Middle White boar, had had a strange dream on the previous night and wished to communicate it to the other animals. It had been agreed that they should all meet in the big barn as soon as Mr. Jones was safely out of the way. Old Major (so he was always... see complete book description

Didn't Orwell make just that point about slogans in Animal Farm?

'Four legs good, two legs bad'?

'Absolute power corrupts absolutely' was the slogan I learnt ;-)

Aside from that I agree that it was totalitarian regimes Orwell despised ..whether it was Marxist, Fascist, Socialist or whatever..the communist one just happened to be the one he used as an example in this book.

i think you hit on orwells point, be it britian, russia, communism, democracy or a king, some systems seem to be more inclined to abuse, but as all systems are designed and run by humans (even the religious govt systems), they can and will be abused. a good system like the american democracy still requires constant attention by the citizens or it becomes its own ditatorship with the figleaf of democracy covering it.

I would like to say that sometimes, there might not be anything wrong with political systems as they are just that, ideas. It's how people interpret it that could potentially cause problems for other people. Hence, I would say that any political system has the chance of going wrong, not just Communism.

This book just shows us tht communism will not work when we are interpreting it from a capitalist point of view, which was what happened in Russia.
