“Oliver Twist” was Dickens’ fantastically successful second novel, in which the author chose to get as far away from the sunny Pickwickian universe of his first as he could get. We’re so used to the Hollywoodized and even musicalized versions of this tale that it’s difficult to understand how...

A chilling visiion of the lives of poor children in 19th century London. Fagin is a classic (Have you seen slumdog Millionaire?). Must read.

Oliver is so sweet he is boring, but the villains are wonderful. Dirty and violent. Another great from Mr. Dickens.

This book is about a poor boy who is an orphan. He lost his parents when he was a young boy, and he was put to work at a place that was kind of like a sweatshop, but not as bad. He was forced to work, in exchange for a place to stay and a minimal amount of food. One day he asks for more food, and the ruler of the orphanage orders him to get beheaded. The judge rules him as innocent, and he works for a child and his family. He is mistreated by this new family and decides to adventure the world, looking for a new home.

Had only read the classic editions of Charles Dickens as a kid. Enjoyed the style of writing quite a lot. The story of a struggle of an orphan although has become quite commonplace over the years.

Kind of boring. I read it because it's supposed to be a classic, but it was just ok... Pretty slow moving. I hope A Tale of Two Cities is better
