  • Lotus: The main protagonist of "Raise the Red Lantern." After the suicide of her father, with limited opitions she resolves to become a concubine of a wealthy merchant. She is the Fourth Mistress.
  • Master Chen Zuoqian: A wealthy merchant to whom Lotus is a concubine. He runs a polyamorous household of four women, in which he attempts to maintain a cordial rapport within the brood.
  • Cloud: Second Mistress, upon Lotus' arrival she immediately extends counsel and friendship to the young woman.
  • Coral: Third Mistress, she is extremely beautiful and a former opera singer to whom Lotus views as a mystery. Coral is initially presented as abrasive and suggested as being greatly manipulative.
  • Joy: First Mistress, the oldest wife of Master Chen, who is conceived as being the mediator of the women. She often places herself in higher esteem over the other women, but nonetheless is an active partaker of the distrust and constant scheming within the household.
  • Swallow: Lotus' personal servant. The Fourth Mistress and the young girl immediately take a disliking to the other, urging the girl, who has ambitions of becoming a mistress, to work actively against Lotus.
  • Feipu: First Son, he is the firstborn and only son of Master Chen and Joy. He is a contrast to the workings of the household, for he immediately welcomes Lotus- whom eventually considers him a friend. The two develop a close bond.
