En route to a new teaching position, an artist (Walter) encounters a woman dressed in white and aids her in finding her way to London. His new students, half sisters, capture his interest - one (Marian) by her common sense and plainspokenness, the other (Laura) by love. Although Laura loves him too, she is engaged to the scheming, mercenary Percival Glyde. Walter, unable to bear losing Laura, leaves the country. Marian steps in as her protector but Percival's friend Fosco arrives on the scene and their need for Laura's money turns deadly after the woman dressed in white comes to Laura with the information of a ruinous Secret about Percival. Walter returns and works to uncover the Secret and restore Laura's name and position.
