“I have been working down a "books-you-should-read" list; CB's book is near the beginning but I was not eager to tackle it. I was surprised at how quickly I was wound into the story. Great read.”

So much symbolism, such great compare/contrast between Mr. Rochester (repentant, humbled sinner who truly loves) and St. John Rivers (proud, cold man with a loveless religion) at the end of the book.
Jane is a spunky heroine who is twice tempted to lose herself under the domination of a despotic man--each time she resists, and eventually her wise choices bring her joy.
A deeply satisfying resolution on many levels.”
“I read this book when a teenager under a Japanese military occupation. Formed an opinion (probably unreal) about the background of British colonials, many of whom were than in Changi POW camp in Singapore.”
