The love that is portrayed and described in this book between Heathcliff and Catherine is so loud, outrageous and almost embarrassing to me. But I love it. Reading this book threw me back into a wild romantic world that I hadn't thought about or...” see full review » see other reviews » |

“Without knowing what the story would be about, I began reading this book based solely on it's sparkling reviews - and I have no regrets! This is a fascinating tale of a feverish love between two horribly self-absorbed and greedy individuals. In my modern glorification of perfect love I found myself searching for the faintest sign that the two main characters would show some compassion and prove themselves human after all, and never have I been more delightfully disappointed. In spite of it's wealth of detail, this book reads very quickly due to brilliant writing and daringly portrayed characters. No better tale exists to put the hopeless romantic in their place!”

I kept expecting Heathcliff to make a turn and be noble. He didn't. It went from one bad turn to the next. It was an interesting read, but very frustrating. I understand it is a product of the times and behaviors were dictated by laws and social norms but I desperately wanted one of the women to rise up and refuse to be taken advantage of or at least not be weak.”

all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them. It is an original story mainly because of the cruelty it shows, and the fact that there's not just love as a powerful feeling or insctinct, there's hate and passion too. This is definately not a pink love story with a classical happy ending, which is wird because of its age. Now it is considered a classic of English literature, and a favorite on my shelf :)”
“I love the dark romance. The characters that you can't help but have a love hate relationship with don't get a happy ending and the ones that you love get the happy ending that you hope they get”

From the sinister Heathcliff to the caring Cathy, readers are introduced to various characters who define this historical period.”

The intensity of everyone is off-putting, the "passion" is just selfishness, and Heathcliff is intolerable. And a puppykiller. Skip it, and read Anne Bronte's _The Tenant of Wildfell Hall_ instead.”
