This profound book breathes wisdom gathered over several decades. I've read many books and essays on creativity, but I can't remember any that was as solid. It is probably not a good first book on the subject; the reader is better off having read and thought about it before.

Twyla Tharp succinctly addresses the paradox we all face when desiring to create -- how to impose enough structure upon our creative selves so that we can actually produce and not simply ruminate? She is specific, direct, and inspiring, prescribing action, practice, and self-discipline without excuses or loopholes. "Just Do It" might be her motto, and yet she understands the fears, doubts, and ruts that trip up so many of us. She shares her demons and gives us methods to defeat our own. Artists are not superhuman beings who effortlessly channel creative brilliance...Any of us can create, if only we cultivate the habits of discipline and practice that allow us to do so. --RS

This profound book breathes wisdom gathered over several decades. I've read many books and essays on creativity, but I can't remember any that was as solid. It is probably not a good first book on the subject; the reader is better off having read and thought about it before.

The author gives several exercises, all of which should give the reader a base to grow from. Most exercises require commitment and soul-searching, so prepare to take the time and effort to do them - it should be well worth it.

Sadly, I read this book without the peace and commitment to perform all exercises. I will re-read this wonderful book as it should be read, sooner rather than later.

I absolutely love this book. I found it to be very motivating for me in my creative life. She has broken down creative work in understandable terms that are very helpful. She is a master of metaphor and is able to illustrate whatever point she if making with stories of her own and others work. The reading of it was thoroughly enjoyable. I got it from the library and I did not want to give it back. I wrote pages of notes for myself.

An excellent guide for any creative professional. Twyla provides accessible tools to use to better understand your creative strengths, know how to extract your creative ideas, and get yourself unstuck. The layout, style and exercises all help to make it a light and easy read.
