Banana Yoshimoto is heartbreaking. She writes so sensitively and sensibly. I couldn't help loving this book so much more thn I intended to. Her characters are real, like they're really alive, and most of them are deeply disturbed and unhappy. It makes the reader want to reach out to them with empathy, and at the same time, look at the world with a new view. Look at the things that truly matter in this world.

I didn't love this one. Left me pretty unimpressed, although it has won several awards in japan. Being unfamiliar with any popular. Japanese literature, I am glad to have read it, but I am also glad it was very short!

this book was very depressing...i was living in japan while reading it..i was very affected by this book that i had to give it away to a friend also living in japan at that time...the images this book left was very vivid that i found myself feeling sad/melancholic for several days...the japanese culture indeed is reflected in this book...
