Characters/People edit see section history

  • Lev: The philosopher brother who has lived his life against the automatic response. From a boy, he has always made up his own mind and set himself on his own course of action. Physically cartoonish and grotesque, his personality is that of a poet. He is the perfect foil to his brother's nature. This core character is a passifist in the heart of the brutal gulag, despite the danger this creates.
  • Zoya: Beautiful and exotic, Zoya is at the heart of this love story. She is the object of affection and obsession between the brothers. However, Amis uses her character as a mirror to reflect the true nature of her suitors. Only for one brief instant do we truly get to hear her voice.
  • Lidiya: Add a description of this character.
  • Venus: The step daughter, to whom this confessional tale is being told through letters.
  • Joseph Vissarionovich
  • Janusz
  • Jocelyn
  • Uglik: Prison guard that had a special taste for violence. Describes as "second generation."
  • Vadim
  • Kitty: Sister.
  • Ananias
