Precursor to "American Beauty".
Not an easy book to read but one that any corporate type can relate to easily!

Brilliant style of writing, and I think it perfectly does what Heller intended it to do. But it's not the kind of book I fancy reading. Slocum's mind isn't one I particularly like to meander endlessly and repetitively through, it's nothing but lust and depression.

A very long book that chronicles the life of a dysfuctional family. I found the main character's tales of his adventures at work rather amusing. The end of the story seemed unnecessarily abrupt, as if Heller had to figure out a quick way to end a long and rather rambling book. It had its moments, but I wouldn't want to read this one again.

Catch-22 is one of my favorite novels but this second book by Heller is tedious. I think the narrative voice is what really got me. I prefer much leaner prose and the repetitions were driving me nuts. Also, I think the book is really dated when read in our modern context, especially in the ways women are portrayed.

by far Heller's best book, beautiful insight into the humdrum life of marriage and kids

Repetitious middle third and I felt like the ending should have been further fleshed out. Characteristically Heller funny

SOMETHING HAPPENED... to Joseph Heller's writing.
A journey to one selfish, chauvinist male's search for the American Dream. In other words, a journey to Hell. And let me tell you, reading this book, I definitely thought I was there.

Heller cracks up again with a fear of guy that every closed door in front of him has few people beyond it who are planning a conspiracy against him...
