The book starts with Mary Grace in hospital who has been beaten up by her husband. 2 years later she succeeds in making an escape with her son from her abusive husband. 7 years later her husband comes to know that the accident was planned. He sets out in search of her killing many people along the way especially the ones who helped her and including her neighbor.
Meanwhile, Mary Grace has changed her name to Caroline Stewart and has named her son Tom Stewart. She falls in love with a history professor, who accepts her with her abusive past.
Her husband catches up with her but he is finally caught by the police when he takes her to the cabin. He is killed by the prison population when they get to know that he murdered a black boy.
