This heartfelt novel tells the story of Paris, abandoned by an alcoholic mother and left to squander in foster care with her brother Malcolm. After escaping with him from an abusive foster parent, she and Malcolm are split and she is sent to live with the Lincolns who seem too good to be true. This story is simply-told but heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.

A very touching book about Paris, a foster child who is forced to learn how to trust people.

I liked this short, generally upbeat book about a girl coming to terms with being a foster child, separated from her brother and having a mother who's less than perfect.

childrens novel very realistic fiction. working for the local CASA office i have become familiar with the foster care system i have also taken an interest in the juvenile justice system. i have seen unfortunate cases of abuse and neglect and sibling separation. road to paris is another one of those cases, written from the perspective of the children, my heart hurts for them as i couldnt imagine being away from my siblings nor have i ever had to deal with the fact that i dont have a true home, the reading goes by fast if that tells you anything(once you stop you cant put it down!)

The Road to Paris, by Nikki Grimes, is about a girl in the foster care system. She is a young African-American living with the only African-American family in the entire community. She learns about friendship, trust, and forgiveness when she is finally placed with a good family. In the end she has to make an important decision that really shows the growth in Paris. This is great story about a girl who has always been dealt a bad hand until now...

Summary: Paris was separated with her dear brother Malcolm because they had an alcoholic mother. Compared to Malcolm, Paris met a good new family and had some good memories with the family members. Meanwhile, she met some good friends in her new school. Although she experienced a lot when she was fostered by another family, she missed her dear brother and really wanted to live with him. At last, Paris decided to go back her real mother’s new family and started another new life.
Instructional activity: Before the students read this book, the teacher will divide the class into four groups. Ask each group to pick a topic from “Family/ School/ Siblings/ Friendship” and then tell your story to other group members.
