- Simon de Navarre: wizard, advisor to Richard, has a twisted claw-like right hand and scarred body from his time as a Knight on Crusade, nicknamed "Grendel", briefly was a monk, has golden eyes, dark hair with a thick streak of silver.
- Claire: Alys' sister, very beautiful, headstrong, flighty, golden waist length hair, green eyes.
- Thomas du Raymer: knight at Richard's court, husband to the faithless Gwyneth, described as grim, sober, and handsome with pale hair and flinty blue eyes. He is a very honorable man.
- Richard the fair: Half-brother to Alys and Claire. He is described as having a corpulent body, thinning straw-like hair, ruddy face, cruel, manipulative.
