As usual, Marlowe gets himself into trouble just asking questions, this time for a girl looking for her missing brother. Marlowe's travels through and among the various strata of L.A. class makes for a fascinating view of this 20th-century frontier city.”

The standard M.O. for hard-boiled detectives is to meet a handful of femme fatales, alluring seductresses whose job is to distract the modern-day knight from his imperfect quest for justice. Yet in Chandler, women tend to be something else--flesh-and-blood people, no better or worse on average than anyone else, simply trying to get by in a thoroughly corrupted world.
The Little Sister is a relatively simple mystery of two sisters, one full of innocence and one mired in corruption and manipulation. But of course it is more than that, and Chandler's expert characterizations make it one of his best.”
“Brilliant! excellent narrative. very witty.”
