Not a big fan of short stories but I enjoyed these. They were intriguing and interesting. If you like short stories you must read this. ”

I don't know if Anthony Doerr was a Peace Corps volunteer or not (one of his stories did have a PC volunteer in it), but he certainly has traveled and uses his experiences abroad to tell some very interesting stories. I liked it.”

They take place in a wide range of geographical settings including Africa, Oregon, Montana, and small-town America. The title story takes place entirely on a beach in Kenya. Two of the other stories move between Africa and the United States. In each and every story in the collection, there is a very strong sense of the land. The stories are poignant and touching, beautifully and subtly written.”

You can't put a price on ecologically based writing. Each is truly compelling and, in my opinion, teach something about our relationship to the world around us.”

Yes | No“When I came across this collection at the bookstore and started to flip through, I was in shock to discover that Lamu is the backdrop for the first, and most artful, of the stories in this collection. I'm a geography nerd, and a travel junkie, and I dream of visiting the East Coast of Africa. My Zanzibar fantasies have been made more serious, and more embellished, by a globe-trotting friend who visited Lamu years ago and put it on the map for me. As someone who took marine biology seriously enough to go to oceanography summer camp and take grad school courses in marine anatomy at the Shedd Aquarium while I was still in high school (but then ended up majoring in English), Doerr's first story, "The Shell Collector" spoke to my every need as a reader, my every dream as a traveler, and my every curiosity as a curiosity seeker. [br/][br/]Many times I don't like when I read a book and can feel the author struggling to construct a sentence (read: Jonathan Franzen), and that might just be because I'm a manuscript editor. I sometimes start to feel the struggle with Doerr ("the vermicular staircase," repeated use of certain words) but then at the end of the sentence I find myself in awe of his perfect construction, his illuminating word choice, and really the beauty in his simplicity.”
