Not very good fantasy. Got to the end but it was a bit of a chore. Sold it.

After inhaling May's Galactic Milieu series in the 90s, I was thrilled to see the Boreal Moon books come out. Unfortunately, the only part of May's genius that carries over from her earlier work is her amazing creative talent for worldbuilding. Some of the best sections from Conqueror's Moon were the descriptive passages, which says something right there, although her magic is fresh and innovative. Her characters have always leaned towards the soap-operaish but here they seem exceptionally flat, perhaps because the narrative leans heavily on tried & true plot tricks: a proud and noble king determined to unite the kindoms and become emperor, but with a secret that could ruin him; a tempestuous queen who is scorned and becomes hellbent on bringing her king down by revealing his secret at the most inopportune time...you get the picture.

May again attempts to use a narrator, this time a sneaky thief called Snudge who ends up in the service of the aforementioned king, but the device that served her so well in the Galactic Milieu saga fails to work its magic here, because the character is more richly developed than those he interacts with, robbing his narration of the musical counterpoint that this story desperately needs. Much of the time, this book comes across as a romance novel in a fantasy setting, but alas my devotion to May is such that I finished all three books. I won't be re-reading them any time soon, though.
