A good read of one of our most influential founding fathers. Not much on his youth, but it really picks up during the French and Indian War with his service and planning of some of the wilderness battles, including Fort Duquense. When shifting to the American Revolution, you begin to see that things did fall into place for Washington, just as all hope appeared lost. It discusses his Fabian strategy for warfare, which definitely was a tough thing for him. Ellis also gives you a good look into his thought processes and his hunger to delivery Independence for all.

During his presidential years, you can see how he became a surrogate father to Jefferson, Hamilton, and others, while trying to keep them together. Jefferson is portrayed as a plotter against Washington, albeit in secret first. Really lets the reader come to their own conclusions on Hamilton and Jefferson.

Chapter on his will and his thoughts on slavery are interesting, as he struggled with the question of emancipation, even as a Southern farmer. He knew emancipation must come, and finally reflected that personally, while revising his will.
