This book is a difficult read. Not only does the author overdo nearly every set of description, he loooooves to draw things out. But perhaps that is part of his charm. I had to read this for 9th grade English Lit. It might be a great novel, but at 14 it was just horribly depressing. Oliver Twist was next... it was a decade before I read more Dickens.

well, you put me on the spot. I've read Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Our Mutual Friend, A Christmas Carol..I tried Oliver Twist, but gave up. Dickens can can be too sprawling for my taste. I think Great Expectations is Dickens best of the ones I read - it's the most memorable one for me. I think it has to do with the way his characters are drawn - above all else.
