Things you've felt but never had the guts to admit he comes out and states. It's thought provoking. I thought it was a great read. Definitely not the style of teaching you would read from a BJU...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“It was entertaining, but basically unhelpful. Not as bad as Rob Bell, and much, much better than McLaren, but still not worth reading. It did encourage me to make friends with people who are different than me.” see full review » see other reviews » |

I can't stand it when one group stands on its soapbox preaching that their way is best. Obviously every religion has its negative points but each one does have something beneficial to offer to anyone willing to look at it through open eyes.”

People sort of get in a box of how Christianity should be and I think a book like this gives us a little more variety and depth and helps us see that we are all different but all loved by God. ”

It seemed very modern and hip. It really reminded me a lot though, of Mere Christianity. I'm not sure I would recommend this book for anyone who is capable of actually reading Mere Christianity. The narrator often frustrated me. Also, from my own study of the Bible, I do disagree with some of the things he says, for example that joy and love come and go in our lives, 1Thess 5:16 says to "be joyful always", that wouldn't be a command if we couldn't do it!
Blue Like Jazz is a quick and easy read, good entertainment for a cold, rainy afternoon. If anyone is interested in reading about someone else's search for spirituality, this is a decent choice. But if you are more interested in theology or an explanation of why to believe in Christ, there are many other, better books. I'd start with CS Lewis's "Mere Christianity". ”
“refreshing book thats not about "religion" as such and more non religious spirituallity. not a heavy theological book which im grateful for. a light read that i reckon everyone could enjoy and learn from. don's honesty is refreshing.”
