I am not usually into non-fiction, but I loved this, probably because I love Miles' work so much and enjoyed the commentary on what have become some of my favorite albums. This also introduced me to some of his contemporaries I had not already discovered and helped me appreciate a little more...

For more than forty years Miles Davis has been in the front rank of American music. Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles is one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. The subject of several biographies, now Miles speaks out himself about his extraordinary life. Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he has encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life. But above all, Miles talks about music and musicians, including the legends he has played with over the years: Bird, Dizzy, Monk, Trane, Mingus, and many others. The man who has given us some of the most exciting music of the past few decades has now given us a compelling and fascinating autobiography, featuring a concise discography and thirty-two pages of photographs.

Wonderful. If you want to get a glimpse into the mind of a great musician, Miles’ autobiography is a collection of crazy intense stories of the life of a man who (in his own words) “changed music five or six times.” While Davis is not shy about his own gifts, one of the most rewarding parts of the book is his regard for fellow musicians. A significant portion of the book is Davis explaining other musicians’ talent- breaking down their strength and weaknesses. This is not a technical analysis of music-- rather a testimonial of Davis’ passion for music and innovation- and a marvelous look into the jazz scene of the 40’s- clear into the 80’s.

I enjoyed gaining some insights to this fine musician. Obviously compiled from interview transcripts, yet reflecting a good sense of how self aware this difficult and complex person was.

Absolutely amazing writing. Feels extremely personal and you are up close and personal with all of the warts and idiosyncrasies of a true genius. The music will mean so much more after reading this and you feel as if you have been on a long, bumpy ride (and this just after the introduction!)

Great if inaccurate autobiography. Not only Miles' music is thrilling, is life is too.

Well ... The language is really poor. A lot of swearing, rather short sentences and very reduced vocabulary. So, it is not quite that enjoyable to read.

It is still an interesting read, if you are into Jazz and curious to learn more about the life of a man who has made major contributions to modern Jazz.

Very informative book, insightful. The last 1/5th of the book was a bit tedious, too scatter-brained. I had trouble finishing it.
