The Journeyman goes through Jared's early life to when he was betrothed and had his own land, beginning from when he was learning how to paint to where he was doing it himself. He had thoughts of a girl, and decided to propose to her after he had established himself as a painter.

However, in the village he "settled" down in, doing painting or "stenciling" on the walls for people, winter was very harsh (it was also bad all around, too). The villagers heard that when Jared was born, all the crops at his home were killed by frost. As idle, upset people may do, a group of them made Jared their scapegoat, and begin thinking he was a witch (because he didn't feel cold as bad as others, he had saved a cow which was almost dead, and more).

But there were others who stood for him, because he had helped their families. In the end, a "trial" was held in the Meeting House. Some testified against him (though most of what they said never happened), but in the end Jennet, the girl Jared wanted, brought Jared's corn in, the only corn crop that had survived, and told how he was going to share with all. That ended the meeting, as it was declared that Jared was not a witch.
