One of the most controversial books within Christendom today - and for good reason. It challenges the roots of Church as Christians know it today. Responses have run the gamut from sincere thanks for putting words to people's concerns to accusations of outright heresy. These types of responses generally mean the author is on to something, and I believe he is.

Before you accuse him of not providing any answers, please be sure to read the follow-up to this book, Reimagining Church.

While challenging, I can not say the attitude of the author makes any of his insights actually "insightful."

Rented my copy from bookswim.com and I'm really considering buying it full out.

Honest and with backup text. Hits the issues a lot of people don't want to think about or question and the author cites his claims. Very reasonable responses to people who don't understand those of us who are un-churched.

February 21, 2008: Check out the late John G. Jackson's pamphlet, "Pagan Origins of the Christ Myth," published by the American Atheists. Also check out Jackson's book, "Christianity Before Christ," also published by the American Atheists. One of the most interesting contemporary books published in the U.S. is by Jennifer Michael Hecht, and it was published in 2003, and is entitled, "Doubt, A History: The Great Doubters and Their Legacy of Innovation, from Socrates and Jesus To Thomas Jefferson and Emily Dickinson." And a more recent book is by Susan Jacoby, and entitled, "Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism." They are all pertinent to the issues discussed here, in my view. Best for now, Allan Greene a/k/a tompaine1917@yahoo.com

I've only read an excerpt from the book, but will reading this book actually enable me to be a real Christian. Will I encounter Church outside the established Church. I'm going to make the break sooner or later but is there really church outside of the buildings that we have come to associate as Church?
